Africa First custom hunting and fly fishing safari’s is a “new age” outfitter. We have been in business since 1999, excelling in giving our clients the best experience during their time spent with us. We can assure you of a once in a lifetime experience!
We inspire life long friendships, transfer advanced knowledge and strengthen ethical hunting in Africa.
On the fly-fishing side, Africa First offers guided experiences at some of Southern Africa’s most renowned freshwater destinations. We are proud to introduce anglers to South Africa’s indigenous yellowfish—one of the country’s most exciting freshwater game fish. Often mistaken for carp, yellowfish are powerful, challenging, and highly rewarding to target on fly, with sight-fishing using dry flies being one of the most exhilarating experiences an angler can enjoy.
Of the nine yellowfish species found in South Africa, the Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish are the most sought after by fly anglers. Africa First specialises in guiding clients to these remarkable fish in world-class waters, including Douglas, the Lower Orange River, Sterkfontein Dam, Vanderkloof Dam, and Gariep Dam.
For those seeking an even greater challenge, we also offer specialised Tigerfish expeditions on the mighty Zambezi River in Zambia, providing anglers with the opportunity to pursue one of Africa’s most iconic freshwater predators.
Africa First provides structured education and development programs designed to build knowledge, confidence, and technical ability in fly fishing and outdoor ethics. These sessions focus on skill progression, responsible angling practices, and developing anglers who understand both technique and conservation.
Fly-tying sessions introduce anglers to the art and science of creating effective flies. These workshops teach the techniques, materials, and patterns needed to produce flies tailored to specific waters and species.
Our base camp and lodge are located just outside the historic town of Douglas in South Africa’s Northern Cape, on the banks of the majestic Vaal River—the country’s second-longest river. This region is renowned for its exceptional plains-game genetics, making it one of Southern Africa’s premier hunting destinations.
Through long-standing relationships with private landowners and exclusive hunting concessions spanning thousands of hectares across Southern Africa, Africa First offers access to diverse and carefully managed hunting areas. Whether you are embarking on your first African safari or pursuing a once-in-a-lifetime trophy, every experience is tailored to your individual goals, ensuring a safe, ethical, and unforgettable adventure.
